Common Boiler Faults and What They Mean

  • Pressure below 1 bar and the boiler has locked out: water is escaping from the system, usually through a leak, a faulty pressure relief valve or an expansion vessel problem.
  • Heating works but no hot water: on a combi, often the diverter valve. On a system or regular boiler, often a motorised valve or the cylinder thermostat.
  • Hot water works but no heating: a stuck valve, a failed pump or a thermostat that isn’t calling for heat.
  • Boiler lights then cuts out: an ignition or flame-sensing fault, a blocked condensate pipe or a flue issue.
  • Banging, gurgling or kettling noises: sludge or limescale restricting the flow, a failing pump or air in the system.
  • Radiators cold at the bottom: sludge build-up in the radiators and pipework.
  • Water leaking from the boiler: a worn seal, a failing valve or the pressure relief valve discharging.
  • Fault code on the display: this varies by make and model, so make a note of the code before you call.

Boiler Losing Pressure? Here's What to Do

Low pressure is one of the most common reasons boilers stop working. Worcester Bosch recommends a pressure between 1 and 2 bar.

To top it up, find the filling loop under your boiler. It’s usually a braided hose or a lever with one or two valves. Open it slowly until the gauge reads between 1 and 1.5 bar, then close it and reset the boiler.

If your boiler needs topping up again within days or weeks, water is escaping from the system. Repeated topping up won’t fix it, so book a repair and we’ll find the leak or faulty part.

Repair or Replace?

We’ll always give you an honest answer. If your boiler is in good shape and the repair is affordable, we’ll fix it. If it’s old, keeps failing, or parts are hard to find, a new boiler may save you money in the long run. We’ll show you both options and let you decide.

Boiler Repairs in Livingston FAQs

Do you repair boilers in Livingston?

Yes. Kenneway Gas repairs gas boilers for homeowners across Livingston, including combi, system and regular boilers. Our Gas Safe engineers diagnose the fault, explain what’s wrong and give you a price before any work starts. Call 07562 288726 to book a repair.

Why are my radiators cold at the bottom?

This is usually caused by sludge, a build-up of rust and debris that settles at the bottom of radiators and blocks the flow of hot water. Bleeding the radiator won’t fix it. The system needs cleaning, and fitting a magnetic filter helps stop the sludge coming back.

My combi has heating but no hot water. What’s wrong?

On a combi boiler, this is often caused by a faulty diverter valve, the part that switches the boiler between heating and hot water. It can also be a sensor fault or a blocked heat exchanger. We test to find the exact cause before replacing anything.

Why does my boiler keep cutting out?

A boiler that lights and then cuts out often has an ignition or flame-sensing fault. It can also be caused by a blocked condensate pipe, low pressure or a flue problem. Make a note of any fault code on the display, as it helps us narrow down the cause quickly.

Can servicing stop my boiler breaking down?

An annual service won’t prevent every fault, but it catches many problems early. Your engineer checks the boiler’s safety and efficiency and spots worn parts before they fail. It’s also needed to keep most manufacturer guarantees valid.
